LG Election: Demand for Fairness is Centre-focus as Lagos Goes to Poll

The upcoming Lagos State Local Government Election July 12, 2025, has brought the fore the imperative for credible polls, with politicians and civil societies calling on the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) to deliver a transparent process devoid of usual rancor that has become a tradition whenever Nigerians get to this electioneering junction.

The election is to fill 57 chairmanship and 376 councillorship seats across 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) with over 7 million registered voters expected to participate.

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which dominated the 2021 LG election, securing all chairmanship seats and 375 of 377 councillorship positions, faces accusations of orchestrating a “selection” rather than a fair electioneering. This led to public distrust, which escalated by several media posts alleging imposition of candidates and other breaches that impact fair electoral outcome.

Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (retd.), LASIEC Boss, has pledged a fair process. However, some concerns linger over the election’s timing, which falls outside the Electoral Act’s mandated window, and capable of encouraging a carefully packaged outcome.

Opposition parties, especially the PDP and Labour Party have emphasized that a transparent election is critical to address voter apathy, thereby, promote political pluralism. They also countered APC’s dominance touting LP’s 2023 electoral feat in Lagos which broke the myth of APC’s invisibility.

As Lagosians prepare to vote, LASIEC must ensure, secure polling and deliver impartial results to reflect the people’s will and uphold democratic principles, demanded civil society organizations.
